Indledning
In a great mansion for many years ago, a beautiful little girl was wearing old cloth that was thorn to pieces.

She sat in her room in the basement all day long. Her mother, the baroness, had banished her, because of the son; she lost, when the daughter was born. The only persons who talked with the girl was the swineherd and a nun.

The nun brought her food and water every single day and the swineherd sneaked down to her in the basement, when it was dark. They played many funny games, and they laughed together as if they were the best friends ever.

When they got bored, he played on his little oak cut violin. He played the most fantastic tunes with it, and the good mood would never stop.

When the swineherd had comforted Tattercoats, the nun entered the dark and cold basement. She saw her tears on the floor, and she asked her, what the problem was.

When Tattercoats had told the story, the nun offered to help her. She would speak with the mother, to take Tattercoats with her.

Few minutes after she came back, and told Tattercoats that her mother had declined to take her with her. She was awfully sad, and she agreed with herself that she would run away from home with the swineherd.
