Poverty is an essential issue in Indian society and has been for centuries. This is especially due to overpopulation, high unemployment as well as a poor welfare system.
Besides this India has also been suppressed by British colonies. This has left a significant mark on the Indian society which has been and still to this day is difficult to overcome.

The text is written from the point of view of the author. Krishnan Varma has written the text from his perspective, so the reader will get better insight to the situation, but also so the text contains a more personal feel to it.
When writing in the POV. of the narrator, the author has the opportunity to add personal touch. Throughout the text Varma has managed to make every sad situation sound somewhat positive.
At first you may mistake his way of writing for positivity, but chances are that he fills the sad parts with sarcasm, not only to pertrade his life as being good to the readers, but maybe it is to convince himself that everything is alright, an example of this is on page 3 line 6-8 “Prodeep is not with us now; he is in the Naxalite underground.
