Poverty is an essential issue in Indian society and has been for centuries. This is especially due to overpopulation, high unemployment as well as a poor welfare system.
Besides this India has also been suppressed by British colonies. This has left a significant mark on the Indian society which has been and still to this day is difficult to overcome.
Sadly problems like these create other problems like hunger, homelessness and more. Precisely these are the main themes of the short story Grass Eaters written by Krishna Varma.
He touches on these problems in a unique language when he writes about a family without clothes, a permanent place to live, as well as food.
Krishna Varma uses tools such as sarcasm to make his short story less sad to read even though he is writing about some of the saddest topics there is to write about. But this is also a good way to make the reader think once more about the story after reading it.
The text is written from the point of view of the author. Krishnan Varma has written the text from his perspective, so the reader will get better insight to the situation, but also so the text contains a more personal feel to it.
When writing in the POV. of the narrator, the author has the opportunity to add personal touch. Throughout the text Varma has managed to make every sad situation sound somewhat positive.
