In a text like The Grass-eaters it would be interesting to take a look at the different things and events influencing the story and the story's ending
to try and find out why our main character is so positive and how the family has not given up yet. And also take a look at What the grass eaters really are about and how the language, setting, theme and so forth all influences the actions of the story.
In continuation of the time we look at the setting of the story, which is set in Calcutta, India. The place is filled to the brim with refugees and as the narrator explains
“if you got up at night to relieve yourself you could not be sure of finding your place again”. They had just fled from Bengal where as the narrator explains “Hindus and Muslims were killing one another”.
As the story goes on it is also explained that “one night we woke to find that the world was running away from us”
what is meant by this is that the wagon they had occupied had been coupled to a train and now they were going off in an unknown direction.
