The Short story mainly takes place in Trevor and Mandy’s house in the Valley. Their house is described as a bit old and lived in, with orange 70’es linoleum floors.
There are toys everywhere and a lot of photos of Trevor and Maddy’s baby. Through the story, the reader gets described various rooms in the house, but the main setting keeps in being in Trevor and Mandy’s house.
The physical setting is a big part of the story and is the most interesting. Darla is a very insecure person, and her mental state and environment seems a bit damaged:
“A little later, “she said, knowing that she wouldn’t, that she hated others seeing her in her swimsuit”. (Page 2, line 60-62).
Both Trevor and Jon keep pushing her to wear a swimsuit, although she says multiple times that she won’t do it.
The fact that she is at a pool party and didn’t bring a swimsuit shows how insecure Darla is, and that her mental health is bad.
The fact that Trevor, but also her boyfriend, keeps asking when she will put on her swimsuit, is probably difficult for her, since she keeps on being pushed and tries to resist.
