The book is characterized by the complicated storytelling technique used by John Fowles. The novel begins in Media Res, which means that you as a reader is thrown into the story without an introduction.
The novel is structured in a specific way, where Frederik refers to the kidnapping as something that already has happened, that is, his reflection of flashbacks from the past. This is seen in the following quote:
“What I’m trying to say is that having her as my guest happened suddenly, it was not something I planned the moment the money came.” (p.19)
The novel is written from two perspectives, first Frederik Clegg’s. From Fredericks’s perspective, the reader is informed of what happened, how and when.
This is told without the big personal touch and is predominantly a neutral description. It is a good portrayal of Frederick as a person;
technically, and unable to put his feelings into words.
This differs greatly from Miranda’s part, which is far more informative - not about what she is exposed to, but what she is thinking and feeling, which supplies the reader with a greater opportunity to get to know her.
