Because in the beginning Tony lip is a racist. He saw the two black men drank of the glasses, and he wil not drink at the same glasses as them. Dolores reacting is good here, she collector the glasses up because she not a racist

How is Tony’s first meeting with Dr. Donald Shirley?
The first meeting taks place in Shirley´s apartment. Tony is very overwhelmed over how rich Shirley is and all his beautiful things

Why is Lip insinuating that driving down to the South can cause problems?
For a black person is very dangous to drive to the South because they couldn´t stand black peoples and they saw blacks as young children wihtout rights.

We see in the movie they are stopped by the police where the police looked suspicious on Shirley in the back of the car.
