Uddrag
1. What do we know about Charlie´s situation in the opening of the novel?
- Charlie doesn't want us to know who he is. He is both in a happy and sad place in his life at this moment in the book, especially after his friend Michael killed himself and stopped going to school. Charlie is trying to think that his family is the reason he is feeling this way.
2. What are the 3 most important events in Charlie’s life in this first part of the book?
- Michael comited suicide and it affected Charlie a lot, Michael was one of Charlies closest friends. He had a special relationship with his aunt Helen, who is dead. He meets Sam and Patrick at the high school football game - Patrick is also the guy called “nothing” in the book.
3. Do we know anything about Charlie’s life before he starts writing the letters?
- He had a special relationship with his aunt Helen, who is dead. Charlie was close with Michael, before he committed suicide.
Charlie and his brother weren't close when he lived at home, but when his brother went to college, he started to miss him.
When the family was watching the final episode of MASH, everyone was crying except for Charlie's father, but when the father went out to make a sandwich, Charlie saw him crying. The father said to Charlie “This is our little secret champ”
4. Characterise Charlie
- Charlie is very honest about everything. He is detail-oriented and he observes everything. He seems to be autistich. He becomes friends with Sam and Patrick. He is a freshman, he is introspective and intelligent.
5. Characterise Charlie's family
- Charlie's mom: Charlie's mother cries a lot. His mother grew up with Charlie's aunt Helen. Charlie's mother was beaten by her father.
- Charlie's Dad: Charlie's father comes across as cold and uncaring. Charlie once tolds in his chapter that his father slapped him after he made Aunt Helen cry, and even though his father felt terrible about doing it he seems to be a little abusive.
- Charlie's brother: He´s playing football for Penn State on a scholarship, and he didn't do well in high school
- Charlie's sister: Charlie's sister was in an abusive and manipulative relationship. When her boyfriend is hitting her, she continues staying with him. She did well in high school.
6. In what ways are Sam and Patrick different from other people in Charlie's life? Why do you think he likes them so much
- I personally think Sam and Patrick are different from other people in Charlie's life because Charlie doesn't have many friends. Sam and Patrick showed interest in Charlie, and I think Charlie needed that.
