My first impression of this song is that it was really boring and slowly. I think people thinks the same things about the song as me, and maybe think it’s a little bit depressive. And if I look at the title “Asleep” it also sounds really boring and sad.
They’re really often singing “sing me to sleep”, and that also makes you really tired. The song does have some parallels to Charlie’s love for Sam. E.g. Charlies feelings to Sam who isn’t retaliated. And one of the themes in the song is to be unhappy, and that is what Charlie is, when he looks at the picture of Sam.
Charlie wants Sam, but can’t have him, and the song describes that feeling. Therefore, it does make sense why he refers to this song when he describes the picture.

Charlies family is similar on the both sides of his family, that we can see in this sentence “My dad’s family is kind of like my mom’s family” (p. 90, l. 22) and in this sentence “My brother once said that it was like the same cousins with different names” (p.90, ll. 22-23).
The big difference in the family, is Charlies mom’s mom, and Charlies dad’s mom. Charlies mom’s mom always had candy when Charlie was little, and his dad’s mom always had cookies, so they were called “Candy grandma” and “Cookies grandma” (p. 91, ll. 4-5).
Charlies aunt, Rebecca, just got divorced a couple of days before they went to their grandma, so Charlies mom told Charlie to not mention it (p. 91, ll. 28-29).
