Uddrag
In the short story “Sweetness” the main character, a “light-skinned” woman, reflects on her motherhood. She gives birth to a baby girl who is much darker than expected.
Because of her personal experiences growing up as an African American in a segregated society she reacts with ambivalence when she realizes that her daughter, Lula Ann, is midnight black.
Having a blue-black baby makes her feel embarrassed. It also breaks her marriage to pieces. She brings up her daughter alone with the intention to protect her against racism.
She trains her to avoid white boys and she tells her to call her “Sweetness” instead of “Mother” because it seems safer.
Lula Ann leaves home as soon as possible, and her mother acknowledges that her intention to protect her daughter also ended up pushing her away.
