The short story ”Sweetness”, which was written in 2015 by Toni Morrison, deals with a woman, who gives birth to a blue-black girl, in the nineties.
Both she and her husband, Louis, are high yellow, and the birth of their child, Lula Ann, ruins their marriage. She is embarrassed of Lula Ann and tells her to call her Sweetness and not Mother
because it would confuse people. She raises Lula Ann to not being sassy or tough because of skin privileges. Lula Ann grows up, moves away from her mother and gets a big-time job in California.
It teaches her mother a lesson, that what you do to children matters. Lula Ann sends money to her mother, who lives at a nursing home, but that’s the only contact they have.
