Indledning
The British short story, “The Tunnel”, which was published in 1982 takes place in Southeast London in a small, decrepit town. The narrator and his girlfriend, Claire, live in an old tenement block, which will soon be demolished. Therefore there is not much to do, so they are simply enjoying each other’s company.

They have run away from Claire's commanding parents, but Claire still has contact with her uncle, and she expects to inherit his fortune someday. As time passes by the young couple falls apart. Claire starts to work many hours at a restaurant and the narrator watches the boys who are digging the tunnel. The same day the tunnel is finished, Claire gets a letter saying her Uncle has passed away.

The story ends with the narrator suggesting that they should take a train somewhere and talk.

The two main characters in the short story come from totally opposite classes of society and they therefore have many different values. Claire comes from a wealthy family and her parents have very high expectations of her. Claire does not fancy the pressure and definitely not how they want to control her life, which is the reason for her relationship with the narrator.

Claire’s background has also made her into a materialistic woman, who chooses money over love, which is shown in the following quote: “She no longer seemed to care about my artistic talents. All she seemed interested in were the letters from her uncle.” (p.4, l.120-122)
