Santa Claus is only for white children. Or so it feels like if you were an Afro-American child in the 1930’s.
As a child you do not see the color of skin, of the person you are talking to. You see their appearance, their behavior, their personality. Your heir their speech and way of talking.
Separating people by color is something you are taught. And by growing up in a widely segregated and racist world, you learn it the hard way.
As an individual living in the 1930’s you cannot avoid being affected by these laws and manners, they are a fundamental pillar of society.

In the story we are shown how she tries her best to shield her son of the awful truth, that their skin-color stops him from seeing, what most children his age dreams of, Santa.
In the story, Joe is portrayed as an innocent and unaware child, that does not understand the reason of the treatment, he is receiving from strangers.
