Arcie forbids Joe to go inside the moving picture theatre, but later in the short story where Joe went inside without his mother's permission, the reader already knew something bad would happen.

The short story is written in a third-person narrative as the teller is an observer outside the action. The teller is not one of the characters in the story instead we hear about different characters in the story.

In this story the narrator is omniscient. The reader is like a fly on the wall as the reader knows all the characters' thoughts.

As an example, in the story, Arcie thinks that white people are inconsiderate as the Missus came home late. The story takes place in the winter season as on that day they were buying gifts for Christmas.

In the paragraph mentioned above, Arcie says that this is not Baltimore, which is located in America, but as the language in the short story is in English the story is most likely in America and most likely the south, as the south was a lot different than Baltimore.
