Indledning
The Great Depression of the 1930s worsened the already bleak economic situation of African Americans.
This meant that the African Americans where in a very bad place at the time, and many of them suffered from poverty and poor living conditions. Many of them fought everyday trying to make ends meet.

This shows that the town is very light and filled with Christmas spirit. But there is still a little something with the city that is unpleasant, which is illustrated by the following description, “They trudged along through the falling snow, both of them a little cold.
But the snow was pretty!” (p. 2, ll. 43-44). In this sentence the setting is described as idyllic when we read the last part “But the snow was pretty”, but we still meet the harsh reality when it is described as cold, and they trudged along.
In the short story the first character we are introduced to is Arcie. We know that Arcie is very hard working, this is described by the following, “Now her back ached and her head felt faint from sheer fatigue.” (p. 1, ll. 3).
