By nature, progression and advancements have led to the need to have more – yet when does it reach an extent of materialism? Materialism is defined as the tendency to consider one’s material possessions and physical comfort at a higher importance than spiritual values.
Therefore, by definition, it is clear that materialism is a subjective concept depending on where one holds their values. Nevertheless, as a collective society, the presence of materialism can have both positive and negative impacts which will be debated in this essay.

So, for the American, the materialism-driven mind may satiate a short-term desire yet damaging impact long-term mental health as well creating debt for some individuals.
However, when examining society, consumer spending accounts for approximately 70 percent of the economic output in the United States and hence this state of materialism translates to greater economic growth.
Due to the symbiotic relationship between producers and consumers, the increased spending and demand will enable producers to continue producing as well as innovating which may benefit society’s advancements.
