Materialisms firm grip on American society is getting tighter and tighter each year. Americans' constant need to purchase the newest phones, cars, shoes, clothes, etc. is overwhelming.
Everyday Americans get told that earning a lot of money and then spending them is part of the American Dream.
A high desire for consumption drives Americans to work hard to achieve success in their jobs. With 68% of the GDP coming from consumer spending
politicians and economists constantly refer to consuming as a positive boom to the economy but like all other things consuming has a downside too.

With Denmark ranking as one of the happiest countries in the world and the US as 15th, there should be a reason to look at how Denmark does it.
The Nordic welfare model leads Denmark to have the basic fundament of security. With things such as free healthcare and unemployment benefits
Danes are sure not to end up on the streets abandoned by society if they end up sick or unemployed. But is it only security that provides happiness?
Security does not create happiness by itself but like Maslow’s pyramid of needs, the bottom layers of the pyramid need to be fulfilled before people can work on self-esteem and self-actualization.
So like many other things, happiness is a pyramid and to reach the top you have to build it up one stone at a time.
