Indledning
Graham Greene writes this short story in third person, like a spotlight on the characters. The writer describes each character in detail whenever they are mentioned to fill the reader in on everything there is to know about the characters.
One may deduce from ‘I Spy’ that the father has been caught as a spy for the Germans and will be executed for high treason and the use of this spotlight technique emphasises that the father and his family would have been under close surveillance.

Throughout the text the mood of Charles Stowe switches from paragraph to paragraph from being fearful to feeling courageous.
An example of this is how Charles is scared of being caught stealing cigarettes but continues and finds his courage for the thought of being able to say he'd had a cigarette to people at school was too enticing.
