The setting takes place in an unnamed English speaking country, and revolves around two different places, Joy’s home and her school.

Joy’s family have moved from their original Asian country of Laos to a western country. The difference between the western and asian culture is represented in the two physical settings Joy revolves around.

The school represents western culture by showing how the kids at school would tease her with the smells of the food dishes she used to eat in Laos, there we see how the cultural differences collide.

As a contrast to the school, the family’s apartment represents Joy’s Asian identity. The apartment is small and has two rooms and it reflects their Asian and Laos traditions. “When he came home from work, the first thing he always did was kick off his shoes.

Then he’d hand over a newspaper to the child, who unfolded sheets on the floor, forming a square, and around that square they sat down to have dinner.”(page 1. line 8-10)

This shows us how they have brought the same beliefs from Loas into their new country. Taking their shoes off and eating on the floor reveal that the family still holds the Asian culture.
