2020. A year that for many was filled with despair and constant news of another unfortunate event. First the wildfires then the coronavirus that would go on to spread to the extent of a full blown still ongoing pandemic.

A pandemic that has taken countless lives which by now have been reduced to a fluctuating number constantly reported. With that it is easy to lose touch and realise actual human beings are being affected by this.

This is a message Ward seems to want to relay and is the intention behind the essay. A message of telling the world “We ain’t going nowhere.” (p. 18 l. 161) and that merely “witnessing” is no longer enough. A message the death of her husband helped her find.

A device Ward uses to condition her readers to be more susceptible to her message is the forms of persuasion more specifically pathos.

Pathos is an element she uses all throughout the whole text even from the very beginning when Ward starts out by telling her husband died.

Instead of just finishing there she proceeds to in several lines give a description of her husband talking about how he was as a person, husband and father.

“He was a foot taller than me and had large, beautiful 5 dark eyes and dexterous, kind hands. He fixed me breakfast and pots of loose-leaf tea every morning. He cried at both of our children’s births, silently, tears glazing his face.
