Indledning
In my analysis of the short story “To build a fire” by Jack London I am primarily focusing on the story's setting, the relationship between the man and the dog, and the main theme of the story.
The story is based on naturalism, which is a type of literature that focuses on the concept “survival of the fittest”. In this short story the naturalism is shown by the man fighting for his life in nature.

As said the man has a dog with him on his journey. The relationship between the man and the dog illustrates how dysfunctional the man's interactions with the dog is. The man acts like he is superior and he treats the dog like a tool.
He show no remorse og respect for the dog. He envy the dog for being able to adapt with nature better than himself and at the end of the story when nature is winning the battle and he is slowly freezing to death, he wants to kill the dog for his own survival.
He wants to warm his hands in the dog's warm body so that he can light a new fire properly, and survive the cold.
