Kate has been looking forward to a holiday of relaxation, but she quickly becomes a target for the locals. As time passes and she moves around the island, she becomes increasingly annoyed by people trying to sell her stuff.
She then walks into a restaurant in annoyance to eat some food, where she has a conversation with the owner of the restaurant called Mustapha.

She seems critical of British politics and society. This can be seen in these sentences “Things in Britain are very bad, very gloomy. Bad politics. Bad economy” and” “Britain’s becoming a terrible place.
All our selfishness and greed has started to eat us”. It also seems that she feels guilty about her behavior, as Mustapha tells her about Zanzibar's history of violence and thousands of killings.
It's like she realizes how well she's doing, even though she thought she was having a bad time. She is made aware of their living standards in contrast to her own.
