Indledning
The parable "Feathers from a thousand li away" tells the tale of a Chinese woman who is determined to immigrate to the United States.
Before she left Shanghai the lady bought a swan from a vendor who told her that the bird was once a duck.
To become a goose, the duck stretched its neck so far and became a swan, prodigious in its hopes. Once this lady sailed to the United States.
She dreamt and wished to raise a daughter so that she could get better opportunities in the new country. Once she arrived in America the immigration officials took the swan from her and left only a single feather.
The swan was significant for the mother because leaving and raising a daughter in the United States symbolized the hopes and dreams for her daughter to get better opportunities than she did.
