A life as a married, Indian woman requires a new set of rules for her. E.g., she is not allowed to call her husband by first name in front of others. That is considered disrespectful. A life as a married woman means that she now is owned by her husband.
Sumita is a curious woman and a fast learner about her new life, both as married and as a new American.
Somesh seems to be a very empathic husband who let his new wife decide when she’s ready for changes like fulfilling her duty as wife in bed.
““Shhh,” he said, although I had made myself silent already. “It’s OK, we’ll wait until you feel like it.” I tried to apologize but he smiled it away and started telling me some more about the store.”
This makes her trust him and makes her wants to take part of his life in the 7-eleven store and when he introduces her to new modern clothing, she’s exciting about it.
