Uddrag
The short story” Bone Deep” (2017) by Martin Malone describes a Sunday night in a seemingly troubled family. In the beginning, thirteen-year-old Ian mentions that someone discovered a skeleton inside a well nearby.

He, his sister Ann, and their father discuss how it could have ended up there. Their paralyzed brother Terry is also present. He survived a car accident where their father fell asleep while driving, which killed Terry’s twin Marcus.

Ian and Ann, as well as their mother, cannot seem to forgive the father for his accident, and Ann consistently draws parallels to it during their conversation.

Eventually, Ian and Ann leave the room, and they discover that Terry has a very close bond with the father and that he has forgiven him.

Many people spend most of their time with their family and they are often closely connected to them. When accidents occur, it can however change the entire dynamics of a family and divide it.

This is the case in Martin Malone’s “Bone Deep” from 2018 where a family struggles with processing the loss of a member whose death was caused by the father.

The story takes place in a family’s home in Ireland. Here, the main character Ian lives with his parents, sister and brother. On a Sunday night Ian, Ann and their father discuss how a skeleton could possibly have ended up inside a well nearby.

Due to the loss of their brother Marcus, the family is rather dysfunctional. We see that in the quotation: “For months after the accident Mum and Dad didn’t speak to each other.

The anniversary is looming now and the brooding silence between Mum and Dad has returned” (ll. 25-26). Here it is shown that the parents rarely communicate even though it has been almost a year since Marcus died, thus creating bad environment for communication in the family.
