Uddrag
The year I turn ten, there are signs warning of riptide. The wind is calm, the sky blue and the water placid as glass. It is early in the day and there are a few people wading in the water and farther down the beach

kids splashing around in a shallow area. Locals with shoe-leather skin walk up and down the beach, and tourists do the seaside stoop hunting shells.

Gulls soar effortlessly against the warm gulf breeze and the buzzing of jet skis through the gulf add a grating tension. At the shore’s edge, I watch fish darting in unison below the surface.

My parents say not to go in beyond my waist. They watch me from shore while sneaking sips of Birra Moretti1 and rubbing lotion on their skin while my older brother follows bikinis up and down the beach.

I stand in the cool water (waving at my parents) while the undertow tug at my ankles, pulling me deeper into the Gulf. When the surface reaches my neck,

I step forward realizing I am in a fight. My father stands abruptly before I lose sight of him, my feet sweep away.

The short story ”The Gift” by Karen Phillips is a story about a single mother of two, who just got divorced from her husband.

She learns that her ex-husband Ron is getting married to a new woman named Amelia. The narrator’s daughter, Elly tells her that Amelia and Ron will go to Bali for their honeymoon.

She remembers that Elly told her how Ron and Amelia met and how the narrator was surprised that Ron found someone new.

She recalls seeing Ron with Amelia for the first time and how surprised she was learning how different Amelia was from her.

At the end, the narrator is thinking to herself. She is grateful that even if she and Ron couldn’t be together, that they have two children together.

She couldn’t live without them. The narrator questions if she and Ron ever really knew each other.
