Maybe his parents work all the time and does not have time for him or his problems, so the only way that they can make it up to him, is to give him all the newest stuff.

We have a lot of good arguments that show exactly what they mean and what the source of the problem is. “They feel they don’t have the time, and sometimes the knowledge, and often try to compensate for this by buying their children gadgets and clothes”.
This quote shows that they are not necessarily bad parents, but that they may just not have the knowledge of how to be better parents but it shows that they are trying.
If we look at the part of the quote where it says they don't have time, you can go back to the first paragraph where it says it is more culturally acceptable to work than to be with your children.
If we look at the communication it was successful because, the writer’s intensions with this text is first to bring the obvious problem to light and the second one was to influence the way we look at British parents.
