4 letters, 1 word: Love. There are many different kinds of love. Love to each other, love to materiel things, but also a lack of love & care. In the short story “Let’s go to the videotape” by Fiona Maazel, there is a clear sight of how positive love, suddenly can turn into a negative word when you lose someone, and you begin to suffer from care failure, which is the case between the two main characters, Nick and Gus.
The relationship between Nick and Gus is very bad. The story which starts in media res, introduces the two main characters, and their relationship. Nick is a single father, because his wife is dead, and that’s why he is very traumatized. He misses someone, and he keeps searching for acceptance and love. He has no one to share his life with anymore, no one to talk to when his son is starting in school, no one to talk to when his son rides his bike for the first time. He feels lonely.
He also has a difficult time dealing with his son´s quietness. His son, Gus, has an inner conflict. He is stuck between the guilt of his mother's death and his father’s videos. He feels like his mother’s death is his fault because she was sitting on the backseat of the car because Gus was feeling sick. He cannot put his grief into words and he thinks that he has to fulfill his father’s needs.
