Worlds Apart is a story of an English woman, Mary, who is married to a Muslim man named Salem. Mary was only 19 years old when she first met her future husband Salem.
The story brings an important conflict between love and cultural differences. How far would you go for love? This is a problem which is being brightened in this story.
Mary is from England and Salem is from Arabia. Salem was on holiday in England and Mary was still at university.
Mary quickly fell in love with Salem because of his middle eastern look with his dark curly hair. The cultural aspect of marrying Salem frightened her a bit.
She knew that once he had married her, he would try to make her conform to Arab standards and the Arab lifestyle. Mary had doubts about living in a Moslem country. After all, she decided to marry him and soon the journey to his country began.
Mary found the lifestyle she was living miserable. As a result of the large family living together under the same roof, Mary had no privacy.
When Mary and Salem had their first child they moved into an apartment on the upper floor. This relocation gave Mary a bit more privacy. Though the other family members would still burst in without an invitation.
The privacy was just one of many problems she had to live with. The longer Mary stayed in the country the greater insight in the Arabic culture she got. She learned that it suppresses women, at least to her understanding.
