Indledning
The tattoo lady is an excerpt from a novel from 2000, called Brick Lane written by Monica Ali. Monica Ali is a mixed raced child, born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1967, by a white English mother and a local Bangladeshi man.
For safety reasons Monica and her family had to flee to England, due to breakout of the civil war in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in 1971.
The family settled in Bolton in northwest England, and Monica experienced anti-Asian sentiments as part of her upbringing.

Another prominent character in the novel is Chanu, who is as mentioned above, Nazneen’s husband. He is 40 years old and therefore much older than her.
Chanu is fat, in poor health and is very fund of food. His work discipline is high, and he is keen to show that he is well educated man.
When he came to the UK, he had lot of ambitions and dreams, and although none of these, have yet happened, he does not seem to be bitter, but is determined, to make sure that he becomes a success.
In the way Nazveen describes her husband it is clear that we are not dealing with the love of her life, however she does see him as kind and toward the end of the excerpt when she is watching him sleep, you sense a feeling of tenderness towards him.
