We don’t really know too much about Red. He’s not a man talking about how his life was before he came to prison.

We don’t know either if Red has an education, but Red is smart regardless. Red is a respected man by anyone in the prison, and he doesn’t get into any trouble.

He is a guy everybody knows, and he also knows everybody. Red also describes the life inside prison compared to the life outside prison: “At first I didn't think I was going to be able to make it on the outside at all.

I've described prison society as a scaled-down model of your outside world, but I had no idea of how fast things moved on the outside; the raw speed people move at.

They even talk faster. And louder.” This quote also says something about how long Red has been in prison, and that he has gotten so used to it.

The main character of the story, Andy, was a former vice president of a bank before he was sent to prison for the murderer.

At first, Andy was terrified when he arrived at Shawshank prison in 1947. He wasn’t really the stereotype of a guy who fits in a prison, and in the first weeks he didn’t talk to anyone.

Andy was usually just walking around minding his own businesses for the most part. Nobody thought Andy could fit into the prison. Some of the guys even had cigarettes on the line on him.

The first person that Andy talked to was Red, “Do you make motivations a part of your business?” Red sensed some humor in Andy’s question and thought that Andy was a decent guy.
