We really don’t know that much about Red, he isn’t a man talking about his time before prison, his life, parents. We don’t know if Red is an educated man, but Red is actually pretty smart.

Red is a man everybody in Shawshank prison respects, he doesn’t get into any kind of trouble and is in some way a known man by everybody and knows everybody.

“At first I didn't think I was going to be able to make it on the outside at all. I've described prison society as a scaled-down model of your outside world, but I had no idea of how fast things moved on the outside; the raw speed people move at.

They even talk faster. And louder.” This really describes how long Red has been in jail, we somehow get this feeling that Red is pretty emotional in this moment, that’s a part of Red we haven’t seen before.
