The injure later causes more greediness between some of the remaining frontiersmen, that chooses to leave the men behind and going without them and ends up with the rest of the frontiersmen leaving Hugh and his son.
Hugh still manages to survive, even though he nearly died several times. No others would ever survive after being in danger for such things.
The only reason he survived, was because he wasn’t being greedy, and he cared about all his people. Hugh glass: “Get in the boat!”
