In the movie, we meet Chris Gardner, his wife Linda and their son Christopher. Chris Gardner’s dream is to sell bone density scanners and make a living of it for his family and himself. However, not everyone is as impressed by the machines’ improved abilities and often find it an unnecessary luxury.
This, he has been told by multiple hospitals, and it results in the family being months behind on rent, while the mother is working overtime for a minimum wage-salary. While trying to sell the bone density scanners, Chris Gardner tries every day for months to get an interview for an internship as a telemarketer at Dean Witter and eventually succeeds despite complications.

He finds joy in his son, Christopher, in having a place to stay for the night and a hot meal and in his internship. Being responsible for your own happiness and wealth is something which is greatly associated with America and the American family.
Furthermore, these are all themes there are related to what we have learned about the topic: the American Dream.
Throughout the movie, we see an undeniable love between a father and son, the love breaking between a man and his wife when she leaves him and their son for a job in New York.
Despite the tragic events of this movie, family is an important element in the story of Chris Gardner, because he keeps his hopes up and continues to try for the sake of his family. He always makes sure that Christopher has a place to sleep - even when the possibility is a public bathroom at a train station.
