Indledning
” Today I feel the need to read the sign, to prove to myself I am really here, that I have come back, finally, to face things” (P.1, L.4-5).

This is what the main character in the short story “the lamb” has struggled with for years… Decades even.

The short story written by Andrea carter I 2019 is about a woman who has felt guilty for her friend, Ruth, who committed suicide in her childhood and who is now back to face her guilt and fears from her past.

The narrator as mentioned earlier has struggled with her love for Ruth and her homosexuality. Ruth almost becomes a symbol for the narrator’s constant conflict of her love for Ruth and her wish to fit in with the popular crowd.

This can for instance be seen here: “I had always wanted to be part of things, to be included, but glasses and frizzy hair hadn’t exactly provided a passport” (P. 2, L. 65-66).

This shows that the narrator is struggling to fit in with the popular crowd. Another example of Ruth becoming a symbol for the narrator is when Dee invites the narrator to a “Paddy’s Day party” (P.2, L. 61).

The narrator chooses not to tell Ruth about the party and gets a bit upset when she sees Ruth there: “I hadn’t told Ruth either, so I’d been surprised to find her there, surprised and a little disappointed if I was honest.

It devalued my invitation if Ruth had been invited too” (P.2, L.68-70). This makes the narrator realize that Ruth is an outsider, and she does not want to be associated with her because she can’t accept the fact that she, the narrator, is also an outcast.

The narrator struggles with her love for Ruth because she symbolizes the narrator’s own homophobia and being an outcast, which are two things the narrator is but struggles to be true to herself about.
