Indledning
The short story “The Larder” by Morris Lurie from 1984 is about a group of tourists, who are on vacation in Australia at the Great Barrier Reef.
When the tourists arrive, some of them decide to go to the reef, while others are staying back to look at the things from the reef that others had brought back from the reef.
The tourists find the shells with creatures from the reef very fascinating and want to bring some of them home as souvenirs.

Uddrag
The tourists in the story have very different mindsets. That is shown in their attitudes towards the life of the shell creatures; “´That's awfully cruel´, said the schoolteacher, and shuddered.
The real-estate agent laughed. ´Nah`, he said.” (P. 92 ll. 32-34) It is clear that the real-estate agent does not care and does not see these creatures as living animals.
He only sees them as a souvenir and as something decorative in his living room. This opinion is not only shown through the real-estate agent but also the other tourists.
They joke and laugh about the animals falling on the grass and make bets about it (P. 93 ll. 23-26).
