It takes long work hours and a toll on one's mental health and social relations.
In the short story ‘The Ladder’ Annie tries her best to climb the ladder of success within the company she works for.

Her associate then calls ins sick, and Annie gets the chance to show her boss Vera that she is capable of taking on responsibility and take the next step towards a promotion.
Annie is quite nervous about this because she does not know what she is supposed to do.
“You don’t know what’s supposed to happen in a boardroom when the men come in – you should’ve asked Vera what happens, exactly,” (page 2, line49).
Even though she does not know what to do, she keeps going and does her best.
