“Anyone who was even remotely plugged into pop culture in the 1990s can recall the Jennifer Aniston hairstyle.
And who doesn't associate Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue magazine, with her signature bob.” – This is how CNN chooses to start their article about the history of hair.
Why is this something anyone would read? Because hair is, and always has been, something that defines a person and an era.
Therefore, hair is something that people are always interested in reading and talking about. So much, that there even is a musical dedicated to the subject. It might not be the best of showbiz, but that is beside the point.
The big question is why? Why is hair so interesting? Not only the hair on our head, but all the tiny – or long – hairs all over our body.
It is something some can turn into a heated argument about feminism and your personal rights to look the way you want to look and so on.
I will continue on that subject in a moment. For starters, I want to talk about me and my experiences with my own hair, as interesting it may be for others to read about.
There are a few theories on why we have hair on our head. Some say it is from when we were aquatic apes, and as aquatic-ape-infants our mothers would latch onto our hair to keep us safe.
I actually really like this theory, but on the other hand, there are some more relatable theories. Such as the Darwin theory saying that our hair is how we displayed our health and virility.
Like how male lions have big manes to attract the ladies. That, for instance, is somehow more relatable to my own feeling towards my hair, as it is something I have always taken much pride in, as it was something a many complemented me on, especially when I was a child.
I had always been a very girly girl, and my hair really portrayed that. It had a blond/goldish colour and reach all the way down my butt. It was importnant to my identity, and as I grew up and changed my style, my hair changed as well.
I wanted to try something different so I dyed it brown. Then I dyed it blond. Then brown again. Then I cut it to my shoulders. All this was something I loved doing, as I felt empowered when trying a new look, to try to see who I could be.
