‘The Hill We Climb’ | Analytical essay | 10 i karakter

The poem ‘The Hill We Climb’ is written by Amanda Gorman, and it was presented at Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony the 20th of January 2021.

Amanda Gorman is a 23-year-old poet and activist, from Los Angeles. Her work mainly focuses on political aspects, like feminism, racism, culture and race.

The speaker of the poem is also the writer, Amanda Gorman. It is clear that she has a strong opinion, and she uses many techniques to express it.
She even represents herself in the actual poem, as a ‘skinny black girl’ (p.1, l. 18-21) ‘where a skinny Black girl, descended from slaves and raised by a single mother, can dream of becoming president’.

This makes the poem more authentic and trustworthy, because we can hear that this topic is very personal and meaningful to the writer.

Amanda Gorman starts out with acknowledging the dark times America has been through recently, such as the coronavirus, the Black Lives Matter-movement and other political problems.
