Indledning
The high seas are the areas beyond national jurisdiction, they are defined as areas outside of the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone of each coastal nation.

The high seas alone cover about half of the earth’s surface while making up about two-thirds of the world’s oceans.

When you think about the high seas, you may stumble on things like extreme weather, enormous waves, or big ocean animals like whales and the great white.

While the high seas contain a lot of wild nature, there is not as much of the sublime nature in the depths of the ocean.

Lophelia deep-sea coral reefs, located 500 meters down from the coast of Florida, contain a wide array of plant- and sea life.

This reef is unique, due to the fact that it is residing at an incredible depth compared to its relatives found in the warm, sunny shallows.

This was previously thought to be impossible, as reefs usually only reside in shallow and sunny areas, but in fact, deep reefs cover a wider part of the seafloor than their shallow relatives.

These deep-sea reefs contain many corals that cannot exist anywhere else, since corals grow extremely slowly, some of these corals could be upwards of 40,000 years old.

Many deep-sea coral reefs have been completely destroyed due to overfishing and most reefs can therefore be found littered with fishing nets, which cut into the corals as if it was nothing, in fact, over half of the world’s deep-sea coral reefs have already been destroyed, and the speed is increasing at an alarming rate.
