Indledning
The American culture and society today are based on a lot of historical things happened back in The United States.

A big number of immigrants was settling in America, and this is now known as the frontier heritage. With that term follows a lot of values, which is still used today and lived by in the United States.

‘Dances with Wolves’ is relevant in relation to the frontier heritage, because the protagonist John Dunbar wants to see how the frontier heritage was and how they lived before it was too late and before it was gone.

John Dunbar is raised in the wild west and is helping his alliance in a civil war. “Closely associated with the frontier ideal of the free individual is the ideal of selfreliance.

If the people living on the frontier were free of many of society’s rules, they were also denied many of society’s comforts and conveniences.

They had to be self-reliant.”3(page 6, line 4 - 10) “The self-reliant frontiersman has been idealized by Americans who have made him the classic American male hero: the rugged individualist.

This hero is a man who has been made physically tough and rugged by the conditions of frontier life. He is skilled with guns and other weapons.”4 (page 6, line 15 – 21)

As the quote says a rugged individualist is a man who is made by the conditions of the frontier life.

John Dunbar is formed by his actions and his experiences while searching for the frontier heritage.
