Essay
Going from childhood to adulthood is not so easy.

You lose you innocence when you realize that the world is not the perfect and idyllic place you thought it was, and there is no going back.

That's exactly what the short story "The flower" is about. When the 10-year-old Myop, discovers a dead body of a hanged man, she goes from innocent childhood into adult life with the awareness of cruel reality of the world.

---

Myop’s character develops during the story. In the beginning she is a curious and innocent girl, who likes to explorer and play around, shown in the way she is walking around, singing, and playing with the animals on the farm.

She doesn't seem aware of her racial identity or the society the family lives in. But when she finds out the dead man was hanged;

it opens her eyes to the real world, and she realizes what violence and racism there exist, and not only all the beauty.
