The main character in this story is a young girl called Myop. Myop is a black girl. You know that because she lives in a sharecropper´s cabin.
“Turning the back on the rusty boards of her family´s sharecropper cabin” (P. 1, ll. 11). It was only black people that lived in a sharecropper´s cabin.
The fact that they live in a sharecropper´s cabin tells us that they are poor. The girl’s name is Myop which means myopic = nærsynet.
There are never given specific information about her, but you can tell a lot about Myop based on her behavior. Something that really shine through in the story is her unawareness of things happening around her.
A hint in the story that would suggest the same thing, would be the last paragraph of the story where Myop picks up a pink flower that symbolize innocence and playfulness which you can compare with Myop.
