Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you very much for giving your time tonight to attend The Harvard Debate Competition.
I, Mathias Humlebæk, am at the top of all my classes here at Harvard University and have therefore been given the special opportunity to share my opinion with you all tonight.
I would like to speak to you all about the death penalty this evening. To be more specific, I would like to speak to you about the death of the death penalty.

In many cases, the prisoners can get life in prison without parole, where they truly can spend the rest of their life in prison, instead of getting the lethal injection or being shot.
I believe that this is one of the main reasons why rehabilitation is a better method than retribution.
Another reason that many see as a strong argument for the death of the death penalty, is the fact that an innocent person can be killed for someone else’s actions.
This is where the moral and ethical arguments come to table. Because many of you here in the crowd today may also believe in retribution, which I respectfully understand
but I greatly hope that none of you here today believe in innocent lives being taken because of someone else’s inhuman actions. This alone should in my opinion be enough to get rid of capital punishment.
When you are taking innocent people’s lives all over the country, shouldn’t this be stopped immediately?
And when you then also look at the financial costs of having the capital punishment system, I simply cannot understand how this is still an actual part of the American system that we live in. Let me illustrate the costs for you.
