The novel is set to be in 1959 and takes place in the very prestigious Welton academy, a boarding school in Vermont. It is very clear that the story doesn’t take place in the present-day America in many ways.

When Charlie answers the phone at the assembly, he goes to the Deans office, ‘’’’Count aloud, Mr. Dalton,’’ Nolan instructed as he slammed the paddle into Charlie´s buttocks.’’ P106.

This definitely wouldn’t happen in a modern boarding school. The way of teaching is also very old fashioned as they read and write but doesn’t discuss a lot ’’Hands flew up into the air, students stood up and sat down like robots

reeling off answers, staunchly taking harsh reprimands for mistakes’’, this is definitely not the way kids are taught today, they are taught a lot more like Mr. Keating is trying teach them.

They also say ‘’sir’’ to their fathers instead of ‘’dad’’ like you would today. The environment at the school is as mentioned, strict and disciplined with very little room for activities and other fun stuff.
