Indledning
A parents death affects a child in a way you can’t imagine - unless you have tried it yourself. The sorrow, doubt and impotence are all left with the questions. It is a pain we don’t talk much about as a society, and it is often a topic we won’t bring up.

In the short story “Dead End” do we meet Maria, who lost her mother 2 years ago. She has since then been left alone with her brother and sister to take care of, because her father is not present in their household due to her mother’s dead.

As a senior in High School, Maria tries to live a normal teen life, and to keep her promise to her mother, that she will get a good education. The other teenagers in school make it hard for her, and especially Frankie Galvan.

Uddrag
Maria and Frankie drove to, and she helps Maria reminding her what she is doing. Maria is scared that she will end up like La Llarona, and she makes her think about her promise with her mother, and not give up her promise for a boy, that thinks she is cute.

La Llarona is also a static character because she doesn’t develop throughout the story. Maria is the protagonist in the story, and Frankie is the antagonist, because they are two opposites.

Frankie is popular and goes out every weekend. Maria is not popular and stays home to do homework and takes care of her siblings, instead of going out.

The author uses foreshadowing on page 4 line 27, where it says, “He offered her a cigarette”. Maria doesn’t smoke, and she is starting to get dragged by him.

Smoking is often compared to bad things, and when he asks her if she wants a cigarette, we know something bad is going to happen. We get the feeling, that something Maria isn’t used to do is going to happen.

All in all, “Dead end” is an example of a situation a lot of us will never experience. Maria is strong and brave for not giving up her promise and taking care of her siblings.

She is independent and knows what she is worth and doesn’t give up because of a teenage boy.
