Indledning
In 1728 the first group of Amish people crossed the Atlantic Ocean and arrived in the "New World" to freely practice their religious way of life.

The Amish were mainly farmers, and as the United States grew westward groups of Amish people migrated to the farm lands of Iowa to settle in communities composed only of Amish people.

The Majority of the Amish population is distributed in five different religious orders – The Old Order Amish: constitute the largest group of Amish settlements.

The Old Order Amish are distinguished from less conservative groups of Amish by their strict adherence to the practice of forbidding automobile ownership and their traditional manner of dress. The Old Order Amish is the concept many outsiders have when they think of “Amish”.

The Amish live by choice in accordance to a set of rules based on how they view biblical scripture.

They have read the Bible and Old Testament and from this, they have created rules of living (Ordnung). “Ordnung” is the German word for order, discipline, rule, arrangement, organization or system.

While on earth, the Amish feel they must follow the Word in how they live each day. And because of their religious beliefs, the Amish try to separate themselves from outsiders, in an effort to avoid temptations and sin.

Because of this self-reliance, the Amish don't draw Social Security or accept other forms of government assistance.

Shunning can be the act of social rejection, or emotional distance. In a religious context, shunning is a formal decision by a denomination, or a congregation to cease interaction with an individual or a group, and follows a particular set of rules.

It differs from, but may be associated with excommunication. The practice of shunning is the main reason that the Amish broke away from the Mennonites in 1693.
