Rumspringa is anticipated as a time for the Amish youth to break the rules. Rumspringa starts at the age of 16 and usually ends at the age of 18. They are allowed to drink alcohol, experience with drugs and have sex.

The main reason for the Rumspringa is for the Amish youth to decide their future. The decision is between staying in the Amish society by getting baptized into the Amish church or to stay in the modern world.

They will get shunned if they choose to stay in the modern world. “Shunned” means to get persistently avoided by the Amish community, even the family of the shunned will turn their back against them.
