Setting
The short story, ‘Reunion’, takes place in New York City, in the USA, at around twelve o’ clock in the day.
The course of the story remains in New York City, but as the story progresses, we follow the main characters to different places around the city.
Even though there is no direct information about the historical period of time, it can be assumed that the story takes place a while back before modern time, because of the nature of the fathers language.
The setting of the story is described through the main character and mainly indirectly by what the characters say and do.
Narration
The story is told in a first person narrative and the narrator describes the setting and the characters involved in the story.
The writer may have chosen to do so because he may have wanted to imply that the situation he describes can be applied to more than one person.
The narrator gives the reader a detailed description of the setting and the characters, through his thoughts and impressions: “He put his arm around me, and I smelled my father the way my mother sniffs a rose.
It was a rich compound of whiskey and after-shave lotion, shoe polish, woolens, and the rankness of a mature male.” This phrase gives the reader a good impression of what the father looks and feels like.
