Indledning
The absence of a father can have many side effects on a child’s upbringing but having a father figure to look up to and idolize can be just as important as a father’s presence.

In John Cheever’s “Reunion” from 1962, we get exposed to how a child’s otherwise good image of his father is ruined by a single meeting.

This short story shows how an insecure adolescent boy is frightened by his father’s public behavior.

The story's antagonist Charlies' dad is the opposite of Charlies' introverted behavior, he is self-centered, extroverted, and a bossy man.

Here Charlie’s dad portrays a much more dominant character who doesn’t shy away from confrontation but instead seeks it.

Charlies is unaware and does not recognize his sons despise of this behavior which leads to him being left at the newsstand.

The short story also explores themes like alcoholism, and multiple factors pointing toward Charlie’s dad being drunk during their time in New York. Page 1 Line 16“I smelled my father the way my mother sniffs a rose.
